After a car accident in 1983, I lived with constant back pain. I tried massage, acupuncture, Feldenkreis, Traeger, constant chiropractic care, but it always returned. The doctors told me I would just “have to live with it.” After two years of this, someone recommended I try the Alexander Technique, and I began a series of lessons with an outstanding teacher.
From the first lesson I knew this was something completely different. After 10-12 lessons my back pain disappeared; but what I didn’t expect was that my TMJ pain, migraine headaches, and menstrual cramps would also disappear. My posture changed, effortlessly. I was choosing to sit up straight because it was more comfortable. I was happier, less stressed, and making better choices in relationships and work.
Thirty years later I can look back to that first series of lessons as the turning point of my life. I chose to become an Alexander Teacher, and there has been nothing more satisfying than making a difference for people suffering from chronic pain. If a doctor has said to you, “You will just have to live with it”–the Alexander Technique offers a possibility that maybe…just maybe…you don’t.
